When people start a health journey, they often ask me the same questions.
"Should I cut carbs?"
"Should I try fasting?"
"What's the best supplement?"
They're all fair questions.
But before we worry about any of that, there's one thing I'd rather people master first.
Drinking enough water.
It sounds almost too simple, doesn't it?
Yet it's one of the biggest game changers when it comes to feeling better, having more energy and improving your overall health.
Our bodies are made up of around 60–70% water. Every single cell relies on it to do its job. Water helps regulate body temperature, lubricates our joints, transports nutrients, removes waste, aids digestion and even helps our brain function properly.
In other words...
If you're running low on water, your body's trying to do a full day's work with half the tools.
Sometimes you're not tired...
You're just dehydrated.
It's amazing how often people tell me they're exhausted by mid-afternoon.
Or they can't concentrate.
Or they've got a headache.
Or they're constantly craving snacks.
While there can be lots of reasons for those things, dehydration is often one that's overlooked.
Sometimes your body isn't asking for more food.
It's simply asking for a drink.
Water won't solve every problem...
But it'll make a lot of things easier.
You'll often notice:
More energy throughout the day.
Better concentration.
Improved exercise performance.
Fewer headaches.
Better digestion.
Healthier skin.
Better recovery after training.
Not bad for something that comes out of the tap!
So... how much should you drink?
People love asking for the magic number.
The truth is, everyone's needs are a little different depending on their size, activity level and the weather.
My favourite piece of advice is simple...
Drink enough water that your urine is a pale straw colour.
Not crystal clear all day.
Not dark yellow.
Somewhere in between.
Your body is pretty good at telling you when you're on the right track.
Here are a few tricks that actually work.
Start your day with a glass of water. Your body has just gone hours without a drink while you've been sleeping. Give it what it's been waiting for.
Before the coffee.
Before checking your phone.
Before the day gets away from you.
Carry a water bottle everywhere.
Out of sight usually means out of mind.
If your bottle is within reach, you'll naturally sip throughout the day without even thinking about it.

Drink before you're thirsty.
Thirst is your body's way of saying it's already playing catch-up.
Try drinking consistently rather than waiting until you're really thirsty.
Add some flavour if you need to.
Fresh lemon, lime, cucumber, mint or berries can make water a little more exciting if plain water isn't your favourite.
Whatever helps you drink more is a win.

Here's the challenge.
For the next seven days, don't change your diet.
Don't add extra workouts.
Don't overcomplicate things.
Just focus on drinking enough water every single day.
See how you feel.
You might be surprised by how much better your body performs when you simply give it what it needs.
Thought to Ponder...
If your body could send you a shopping list every morning, I reckon water would be right at the top.
Sometimes the biggest improvements in our health don't come from doing something extraordinary. They come from consistently doing the simple things well.
